22 illegally work in Lesotho mines

The on- going Public Accounts Committee (PAC) hearing heard on Monday that  about 22 South Africans are reportedly working illegally at Letséng and Kao diamond mines with fraudulently acquired work permits.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment was fingered for offering the work permits to the expatriates illegally.

Lehlohonolo Motlomelo from Construction and Mineworkers Association Union told the PAC that the expatriates work as human resource officers, technicians, electricians and supervisors.

He said this happens despite that Lesotho has academic institutions such as Lerotholi Polytechnic that produce graduates with relevant certificates.

He told the PAC that Basotho who have the relevant qualifications are overlooked and such positions are offered to the South Africans.

The PAC chairperson Selibe Mochoboroane said the practice is the discrimination at its best.

He said, “The ministry of mining has to give answers why Basotho who have qualifications are not given jobs that they qualify for.”

On her part, Labour Commissioner ‘Mamohale Matsoso said the work permits are given to the expatriates if there are no qualified persons in the country.
